Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Mellon.
Etymology: < German Melon, Mellon (J. von Liebig 1834, in Ann. der Chem. u. Pharm. 10 5, as Melon ; for the spelling Mellon compare note s.v. melanuric adj.1), an arbitrary formation. Compare melam n. and -one suffix. N.E.D. (1906) enters this under mellone and gives the pronunciation (me·loun) /ˈmɛləʊn/.
Chemistry.
A cyclic organic compound, [(CN)2NH]3, obtained as a yellow powder by heating certain cyanogenic compounds such as melam.
