Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish melindre.
Etymology: < Spanish melindre honey fritter, sweet cake (1570, earliest in figurative sense ‘affectation’), perhaps < Old French melide (c1220), melite (1226) promised land, land of bliss < classical Latin Melita Malta (see Malta n.) by association with mel honey (see mell n.2). Compare French mellindres, plural (1611 in Cotgrave).
Obsolete. rare.
A kind of sweet pastry or biscuit.
