Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin megaceros.
Etymology: < scientific Latin megaceros (Hart 1830, in Descr. Skeleton Fossil Deer of Ireland, as epithet of Cervus megaceros; adopted as subgenus name by R. Owen: see quot. 1844) < mega- mega- comb. form + ancient Greek κέρας (see kerato- comb. form), after rhinoceros n. Compare scientific Latin Megaloceros, genus name (1828), and medieval Greek μεγαλόκερως having large horns.
Palaeontology.
The Irish elk, a large extinct Pleistocene deer with very large antlers. Also (in form Megaceros): the genus containing this (now called Megaloceros).
