Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name McDonald's.
Etymology: < the name of the McDonald's Corporation, U.S. firm operating a worldwide fast food chain. The first McDonald's restaurant was founded in 1948 in San Bernardino, California, by Maurice (‘Mac’) McDonald (1902–71) and Richard (‘Dick’) McDonald (c1909–98), U.S. restaurateurs. In 1954, franchise rights were bought by Raymond Albert Kroc (1902–84), U.S. entrepreneur, who founded the corporation in 1955.
