单词 mccoy
释义

McCoyn.adj.

Brit. /məˈkɔɪ/, U.S. /məˈkɔɪ/
Forms: 1800s–1900s M'Kay, 1800s– Mackay, 1800s– McCoy, 1900s macoy, 1900s– mackay, 1900s– Macky, 1900s– Macoy, 1900s– McKie, 1900s– mcoy.
Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Originally in form the real Mackay , perhaps arising from confusion (with real adj.2) of the place name Reay in the name of the Reay branch of the Mackay family (see further Sc. National Dict. (1965) at Mackay).A number of early examples refer to alchoholic drink (compare quots. 1856 and 1865 at sense A. 1), but this is not the case in our earliest example. The form McCoy appears to be of North American origin, and may be after one or more personal names: see e.g. Amer. Speech (1958) 33 297–8, Comments on Etymol. (1979) 1 May 4–13, P. P. James The Real McCoy: African-American Invention & Innovation, 1619–1930 (1989). It is unclear whether the following occurrence of The Real McCoy as the title of a song shows a related use:1879 Sarnia Observer (Ontario, Canada) 14 Mar. 5/4 Mr. Wm. Eveland sang ‘The Real McCoy’ in capital style.
