Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Xhosa. Partly a borrowing from Zulu. Etymons: Xhosa imbongi; Zulu imbongi.
Etymology: < Xhosa imbongi and its cognate Zulu imbongi traditional praise poet or public orator (see imbongi n.).
South African colloquial.
1. Chiefly derogatory. A political stooge or apologist; a ‘yes-man’.
