A style of jazz-influenced popular music, esp. influenced by traditional southern African forms, originating in the townships of Johannesburg in the 1950s; (gen.) any form of township dance music.In quot. 1954 the word represents the title of a song, a sign that ‘mbaqanga’ was probably being used in Zulu as the name of the musical style by this time.
