Origin: Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: French maître ; maître d'hôtel n.
Etymology: < French maître master n.1, used as a title of or form of address to a legal functionary (from c1460 in Middle French). In sense 2 short for maître d'hôtel n.; compare maître d' n.Also earlier in English in other collocations, as maître de ballet n., maître d'armes n., petit maître n., and coup de maître at coup n.3 5l. Not fully naturalized in English.
