A silicate of lead and ferric iron crystallizing in the orthorhombic system and occurring as black to dark grey prismatic crystals (see quot. 1962).

Kentrolite can be defined as those members of this series which contain more than 50 mol per cent Pb₂Mn₂Si₂O₉, and the others are called melanotekite.

Mineralogist 53 1278 The synthesis of melanotekite (Pb₂Fe₂Si₂O₉), kentrolite (Pb₂Mn₂Si₂O₉) and of intermediate members of this complete solid solution series has been reported elsewhere (Ito and Frondel, 1967). Using similar procedures, we have synthesized the Sc, Ga and Cr analogues of these compounds.
