Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Greek μελαν- , μέλας , -osis suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μελαν-, μέλας black (see melano- comb. form) + -osis suffix, after French mélanose melanose n. Compare Hellenistic Greek μελάνωσις process of becoming black.
Medicine.
1. Originally: any of various conditions marked by abnormal black or dark brown pigmentation of one or more organs or tissues of the body. Now: spec. any of several conditions characterized by the presence of excessive melanin or of melanocytic lesions in the skin or elsewhere in the body. Also: a benign or premalignant melanocytic lesion (now rare).Use of the word for conditions involving pigments or materials other than melanin survives only in sense 3.
