Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Melanoskop.
Etymology: < German Melanoskop (E. C. Lommel 1871, in Ann. der Physik u. Chem. 143 490) < melano- melano- comb. form + -skop -scope comb. form.
Now historical.
An instrument consisting of a combination of coloured glasses formerly used to exhibit certain optical properties of chlorophyll, and causing the green colour of plants to appear almost black.
