Etymology: Probably < scientific Latin Melanochlora, genus name (R. P. Lesson 1839, in Rev. zool. 2 42; < melano- melano- comb. form + ancient Greek χλωρός yellow (see chloro- comb. form¹), referring to the black and yellow plumage of the sultan tit, the only member of the genus) + -ous suffix. R. G. Mayne (see quot. 1857) gives a Latin form melanochlorus; compare Byzantine Greek μελανόχλωρος dark olive-coloured. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (melănoklō^ə·rəs) /mɛlənəʊˈklɔərəs/.

Obsolete. rare.

Mottled or variegated with black and yellow.
