Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: melancholy n.1, -ize suffix.
Etymology: < melancholy n.1 + -ize suffix, probably after French mélancoliser (a1767; 1620 as reflexive verb in form mélancolizer ) or Middle Dutch melancoliseren. Compare earlier melancholy v. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (me·lănkŏləi:z) /ˈmɛlənkəˌlaɪz/.
Obsolete.
