Etymology: < French méconique (1817 in the phrase acide méconique , translating German Mekonsäure (F. W. Sertuerner 1817, in Ann. der Physik 25 56)) < mécon- (in méconium meconium n.) + -ique -ic suffix.

1. meconic acid n. a crystalline cyclic acid, C₇H₄O₇, a characteristic constituent of opium that is used as an indicator of its presence; 3-hydroxy-γ-pyrone-2,6-dicarboxylic acid.
