Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ballonné.
Etymology: < French ballonné (1718 as †balonné in an Italian source: G. B. Dufort Trattato del ballo nobile (1728) 90), use as noun of past participle of ballonner balloon v., with reference to the bouncing movement of the dancer. Compare French contretemps balonné (1700 as †contretents balonné in the passage translated in quot. 1706).
A bouncing step in dancing; spec. (Ballet) a jump in which the dancer stretches one leg to either the front, the back, or the side and lands on the other, before joining the feet in the cou-de-pied.
