Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ballon.
Etymology: < French ballon dancing step in which the dancer hardly touches the ground (1804), balloon glass (1884 denoting a drinking glass; earlier denoting a chemical vial: see discussion at balloon n.), transferred uses of ballon balloon n., in sense 1 on account of the buoyancy of the dancer's movement, in sense 2 on account of the globular shape of the glass.
1. Elasticity and buoyancy in dancing; esp. (Ballet) the ability to appear effortlessly suspended while performing movements during a jump. Also: an action or step displaying this.
