Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian ballo.
Etymology: < Italian ballo dance, act of dancing (1312), piece of music intended for dancing or composed to a dance rhythm (1551 or earlier) < ballare to dance (see bale v.1). Compare earlier ball n.3, dance n. 2.In plural form balli after the Italian plural form.
1. Any of various choreographed dances, or dance sequences, performed either at a social gathering or on the stage, often to a specific piece of music. Cf. dance n. 2a. Now chiefly historical.
