Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French maumenee.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman maumenee (early 14th cent. in an isolated attestation; compare post-classical Latin mammonia, apparently denoting the same dish, in an isolated late 13th-cent. attestation), probably < Arabic ma'mūniyya a sweet dish usually including rice and chicken, perhaps < al-Ma'mūn, the name of the seventh Abbasid caliph. Forms may have been influenced by Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French malmener, maumener (French malmener) to ill-treat, to lead astray, mislead.
