Etymology: < Middle French melote (13th cent. in Old French) < post-classical Latin melota , melote sheepskin or goatskin (Vetus Latina), especially as worn by a monk (late 4th cent. in this spec. sense) < Hellenistic Greek μηλωτή sheepskin < ancient Greek μῆλον sheep, goat (cognate with Irish míl (small) animal and Welsh mil animal, and with Dutch maal young cow; probably ultimately related to the Indo-European base of small adj.).
Obsolete.
A garment made of skins, characteristically worn by monks.
