Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from German. Or (ii) a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: German Ballerino; Italian ballerino.
Etymology: < German Ballerino (1826 or earlier) or its etymon Italian ballerino professional dancer (a1342) < ballare to dance (see bale v.1) + -ino -ine suffix4. Compare French ballerin (1893 or earlier; rare), Spanish bailarin (early 17th cent.). Compare earlier ballerina n., primo ballerino n.In plural form ballerini after the Italian plural form.
Ballet (chiefly U.S.).
A male ballet dancer. Cf. ballerina n.
