Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Mauritia.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Mauritia (C. Linnaeus filius in Supplementum Plantarum (1781) 70) < the name of Count Johan Maurits van Nassau (Prince Maurice of Nassau) (1604–79), Dutch general and administrator who assisted in the publication of the natural history of Brazil + -ia -ia suffix¹.

Botany.

A genus of tall palm trees (including the ita palm) of tropical South America and the Caribbean which have a crown of fan-shaped leaves and pendulous flower-spikes; (also mauritia) a palm of this genus. Also called miriti, moriche.
