Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: ball n.1, -ed suffix2; ball v.2, -ed suffix1.
Etymology: Partly < ball n.1 + -ed suffix2, and partly < ball v.2 + -ed suffix1. Compare bald adj., which may be of the same origin, and may hence originally have shown the same word. Distribution of early material between sense 1 and bald adj. 1 is uncertain.
1. Originally: ball-shaped; round or rounded. Later: formed into a ball (also with up).Cf. bald adj. 1, and note in etymology.
