Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Spanish mate; French maté.
Etymology: < Spanish mate calabash (1570), infusion of maté (1740) < Quechua mati , glossed by González Holguín in Vocab. dela Lengua Qquichua (1608) as ‘vessel or dish made of calabash’. In quot. 1717 via French maté (1716; 1633 as mati as name of a type of calabash).
