Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < Malayalam mēṭṭi house-servant of foreigners, Tamil mēṭṭi , Telugu mēṭi under-servant, menial. The form in -y was perhaps influenced by matey n.; the monosyllabic form was probably influenced by mate n.2The word mate, meaning ‘attendant on an elephant’ is probably < Sanskrit meṭha elephant-keeper (see H. Yule and A. C. Burnell in Hobson-Jobson (1886) at cited word):1873 Sat. Rev. 6 Sept. 312/1 One of the attendants [of an elephant], who in Indian phraseology is termed ‘a mate’, the title of Mahout being reserved for the head keeper.
South Asian. Now chiefly historical.
A male servant or menial; a kitchen assistant.
