Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian martingana.
Etymology: < Italian regional (Sicily) martingana, perhaps < Occitan martengala , martegala boat of the kind used at Martegues (see martingale n.).Also rarely in more naturalized form martingane.
Now historical.
A kind of boat formerly used in Sicily and parts of the eastern Mediterranean.
