Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French marsouin.
Etymology: < Middle French, French marsouin porpoise (1385; 1086 in Old French in Domesday Book in an isolated attestation), beluga (only in Canadian French) < either Middle Dutch meerswijn or Danish marsvin or Swedish marsvin (see mereswine n.). N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (maɹsū·n) /mɑːˈsuːn/.
Obsolete.
Any of various cetaceans, esp. (in early quots., after European French) a porpoise or (in later quots., after Canadian French) the white whale or beluga, Delphinapterus leucas.
