Etymology: Partly < ancient Greek Μασσαλιῶται, plural (compare α. forms), and partly < classical Latin Massilia Marseilles n. + -ote suffix (see forms s.v.). Compare French massaliote, noun and adjective (1840).
Ancient History.
A. n.
A native or inhabitant of Massalia (modern Marseilles), a Greek colony founded around 600 b.c. on the Mediterranean coast of southern France, and renowned for its stable oligarchic government.The colony was known to Roman writers as Massilia.
