Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese bakufu.
Etymology: < Japanese bakufu (13th cent. with reference to the government and its chief; 11th cent. denoting the camp itself, earliest with reference to China) < a Middle Chinese expression with the literal sense ‘tent government’ (compare Chinese mùfǔ office of a commanding general in ancient China), so called with reference to the command headquarters during military campaigns.
