Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mathématicien.
Etymology: < Middle French, French mathématicien mathematician (c1371), astrologer (1546 in Rabelais) < mathématique mathematic n. + -ien -ian suffix (compare -ician suffix). With sense 2 compare mathematic n. 2, and the corresponding sense of classical Latin mathēmaticus.
