Etymology: < the name of the Casa de Mateus, a large Baroque building near Vila Real, northern Portugal, which is depicted on the wine's label.The wine was created in 1942 by Fernando van Zeller Guedes with the intention of appealing to the developing North American and northern European markets. The Casa de Mateus did not belong to the Guedes family, and its proprietors received a single payment in return for the use of the name and a picture of the building on the label.

A proprietary name for: a popular semi-sparkling rosé wine produced in northern Portugal, originally on an estate near the Casa de Mateus. More fully Mateus Rosé.The name is also applied to white and red wines.
