Origin: A borrowing from Turkish. Etymon: Ottoman Turkish baqlavā.
Etymology: < Ottoman Turkish baqlaġu, bāqlaġı, baqlavā (1474; Turkish baklava, (regional) paklava), further etymology uncertain and disputed.With later uses with reference to Balkan (especially Greek) cuisine compare Modern Greek μπακλαβάς (with μπ regularly representing /b/), Albanian bakllava, Bulgarian baklava, Bosnian baklava, etc., all < Turkish. Compare also Arabic baqlāwa, Persian bāqlabā, Armenian p'axlava, Azerbaijani paxlava (all apparently < Turkish), which have also influenced the English word directly.
A dessert originating in the Middle East made from thin layers of filo pastry filled with chopped nuts and soaked in honey or syrup; (esp.) a piece of this.
