Etymology: < classical Latin māteria matter n.1 + -ous suffix. Compare post-classical Latin materiosus (designating veins) full of blood (one isolated attestation, 4th cent.). In quot. 1611 probably after Italian materioso (1607 or earlier).
Obsolete.
Consisting of matter. Also: significant, important; = material adj. 6a.
