Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin materiarius , -an suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin materiarius (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian; < classical Latin māteria matter n.1 + -ārius -ary suffix1) + -an suffix.Compare French matériaire (1721). Post-classical Latin materiarius probably shows no continuity of use with classical Latin māteriārius concerned with timber.
