单词 masturbate
释义

masturbatev.

Brit. /ˈmastəbeɪt/, U.S. /ˈmæstərˌbeɪt/
Forms: 1800s– masturbate, 1900s– masterbate (irregular).
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin masturbāt-, masturbārī.
Etymology: < classical Latin masturbāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of masturbārī to masturbate (in Martial), further etymology uncertain (see below). Compare French masturber (c1787 in de Sade). The etymology of classical Latin masturbārī has been much disputed. The most widely accepted derivation is < manus hand (see manus n.1) + stuprāre to defile (see stuprate v.), remodelled after turbāre to disturb (see turbation n.); see further the discussion in J. N. Adams Lat. Sexual Vocab. (1982) 209–11. The forms represented by manustupration n., mastuprate v., mastupration n. are etymologically motivated variants of the classical Latin word.
