Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. masto-occipital Brit. /ˌmastəʊɒkˈsɪpᵻtl/, U.S. /ˌmæstoʊɑkˈsɪpᵻd(ə)l/.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: mastoid adj., -o- connective.
Etymology: < mast- (in mastoid adj.) + -o- connective. Compare mastoido- comb. form.Formations are found from mid 19th cent.
Anatomy.
Forming adjectives with the sense ‘of, relating to, or designating the mastoid process or bone and the —— bone of the skull’, applied esp. to sutures of the skull, as masto-occipital, masto-parietal.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin masto- (in mastodynia mastodynia n.) < ancient Greek μαστός man's breast or (more often) woman's breast (compare Ionic and Epic μαζός , Hellenistic Greek μασθός ); of uncertain origin. Compare mastodynia n., mastopathy n.It has been suggested that the Greek words are cognate with ancient Greek μαδᾶν (see madarosis n.), or with mama n.1, or with mast n.2 It is uncertain whether the modern use is modelled on the ancient Greek combining form μαστο-, which only occurs in μαστοειδής mastoid adj. and n., and in Hellenistic Greek μαστόδεσμος and μαστόδετον breast-band. Productive in English from mid 19th cent.
