Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek μαστιγοϕόρος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μαστιγοϕόρος whip-bearing, person carrying a whip ( < μαστιγο- , combining form of μάστιξ whip (see -mastix comb. form) + -ϕόρος : see -phorous comb. form) + -ous suffix. In sense 2 after scientific Latin Mastigophora Mastigophora n. Compare mastigophoric adj. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mæstigǫ·fŏrəs) /mæstɪˈɡɒfərəs/.
Obsolete.
