Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Greek μαστιγοϕόρος; Latin Mastigophora.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μαστιγοϕόρος (see mastigophorous adj. and compare -phore comb. form); in sense 2 via scientific Latin Mastigophora Mastigophora n. Compare (in sense 1) post-classical Latin mastigophorus (1579), French mastigophore (1700), and earlier mastigophorer n.
1. Ancient History. In ancient Greece: an attendant or officer carrying a whip. Cf. mastigophorer n. Obsolete. rare.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
