Etymology: < bake v. + stone n.Some other West Germanic languages show an independent (and apparently later) parallel formation with the sense ʻbrickʼ (literally ʻbaked stoneʼ); compare Old Frisian bakstēn , Dutch baksteen (17th cent.), Middle Low German backstēn , German Backstein (16th cent.). With this sense compare baken tile-stone in quot. a1425 at baken adj. 2. Place names. The English word is also attested in place names from an early date; compare e.g. Bacestaingrave (field name) Tocketts, North Riding, Yorkshire (c1170; now lost), Bastandenecloch , Lancashire (13th cent. in a copy of a late 12th-cent. document; now Baxenden), Bacstanberks (field name) North Riding, Yorkshire (c1230–50; now lost). Variant forms. With the development of the first element compare the discussion at bakehouse n.
A thin flat piece of stone or slate heated and used as a cooking surface or griddle, esp. over an open fire; (later also) an iron or steel plate used for the same purpose, typically being round with a handle on one side. Cf. baking stone n. at baking n. Compounds 2.
