Etymology: Origin uncertain; probably imitative of the bird's call; compare earlier murre n.In form marrock in quot. 1863 perhaps after -ock suffix in e.g. scuttock n., tarrock n., willock n., all referring to the guillemot.
Chiefly Scottish.
An auk, esp. a guillemot or razorbill.
