Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: melano- comb. form, -aemia suffix.
Etymology: < melano- comb. form + -aemia suffix, after German Melanämie (F. T. Frerichs 1855, in Zeitschr. f. klin. Med. 6 321). Compare French mélanémie (1858), and earlier melanaema n.
Medicine. Now rare.
The presence of dark pigment (originally malarial pigment, later spec. melanin or its precursors) melanin or other dark pigment in the blood.
