Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin melampyrum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin melampyrum cow-wheat (6th cent., adopted as a genus name by Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum (1753) II. 605) < Hellenistic Greek μελάμπυρον a cruciferous plant, perhaps Neslia paniculata < ancient Greek μελαμ- (see melano- comb. form) + πυρός wheat (see pyrene n.1). Compare earlier melampyrin n. Compare French mélanopyron (1615), mélampire (1795), mélampyre (1812).
