Compare Byzantine Greek μειο- (in e.g. μειόϕρων thoughtless, μειοπυρεξία remission of fever; already in ancient Greek in (prevocalic) form μειον-, in μειονεκτεῖν to have too little, to be poor, μειονεξία taking less than one's due), combining form of ancient Greek μείων.Used in combination with second elements of Greek origin. The form meio- has been standardized in formations in the fields of botany and biology, mio- in formations in palaeontology and geology (see mio- comb. form). Attested from the first half of the 19th cent. Most formations are native formations in English.
