Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu mehtar; Persian mihtar.
Etymology: < Urdu mehtar headman, lord, chief, and its etymon Persian mihtar headman, lord, chief (occurring in the title mihtar-i rikābkhāna master of the ‘stirrup department’, an official who carried a case of minor items that the king might need, probably referred to in quots. 16621 at sense 1a), later ‘groom (of the stable)’, use as noun of comparative of mih great. Compare matranee n. Compare French meheter (1659 in the source translated in quot. 16621 at sense 1a, itself translating a German source (1656), which also has meheter).
