Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mégistotherme.
Etymology: < French mégistotherme (A. de Candolle 1874, in Arch. des sci. physiques et nat. 50 15) < ancient Greek μέγιστος (see megiston n.) + French -therme -therm comb. form. Compare hekistotherm n., megatherm n., mesotherm n., microtherm n.
Ecology (now historical and rare).
A plant requiring a mean annual temperature of more than 30 degrees C. Cf. megatherm n.

1957 in Proc. National Inst. Sci. India 22 b185 De Candolle (1878) proposed an original classification and proposed also six sub-divisions. Five comprise plants that are physiologically adjusted to various ranges of mean annual temperature and the sixth comprises plants that have made various physiological adaptations to drought. These are the Megistotherms, Megatherms, Mesotherms, Microtherms, Hekistotherms and Xerophytes.
1961 C.-W. Wang Forests of China V. 212 The other ‘groupe physiologique’ is the Megistotherms, plants that require extremely high temperatures (mean annual temperature above 30°C.) The megistotherms, now confined principally to thermal springs, were extensive, according to de Candolle, in the Carboniferous and earlier epochs.
