Etymology: < a first element of uncertain origin + scale n.³ The first element is probably < a personal name Marquoi or Marquois (see quots. 1783, 1849, 1878): Thomas Marquois, who ran a military and naval academy at Norlands in London in the late 18th cent., has been suggested as the inventor of the instrument.A connection with French†marquoir marking instrument, especially a sort of ruler used by tailors (18th cent.), is perhaps less likely.
