Etymology: < marquis n.1 + -ate suffix1, after e.g. Italian marchesato (14th cent. in sense 1, 16th cent. in sense 2), Middle French, French marquisat (1474 in sense 1, 1568 in sense 2; compare earlier marquisé (1400–10)), Spanish marquesado (1479 in sense 1; 1519 in passage translated in quot. a1544 at sense 1).
