Origin: A borrowing from a Polynesian language.
Etymology: < cognate forms denoting such a garment in several Polynesian languages, e.g. Tahitian maro , Maori maro . Compare malo n. N.E.D. (1905) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (ma·ro) /ˈmarɔ/.
A kind of loincloth worn traditionally by the men of many Pacific islands, usually a long strip of bark cloth passing between the legs and around the waist. Cf. sulu n.2
