Etymology: < post-classical Latin Masoretha (1620 or earlier) < Hebrew māsōreṯ , with re-formation of the ending after Latin -ēta, agent suffix, and change of sense apparently after Middle French Massoreth (see Masoreth n.). Compare French Massorète (1678) and earlier Masoreth n., Masorite n.
