Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Masora.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Masora (1518) < post-biblical Hebrew māsōrāh tradition, variant (reinterpreted after māsar to deliver, hand down) of Hebrew māsōreṯ bond (see Masoreth n.). Compare French Massore (1678), Massorah (1762).
Judaism.
The body of rules, principles, and traditions relating to the text of the Hebrew Scriptures, developed by Jewish scholars in the 6th–9th centuries and preserved as critical notes written at the top, bottom, and in the side margins of Hebrew manuscripts of the Bible (though not included in most printed editions); an independent collection of such notes relating to a particular text. Also (occasionally): the scholars whose opinions are embodied in the Masorah, to whom is ascribed the constitution of the present Hebrew text, the addition of vowel points, etc.
