Etymology: < mason n.1 + -ess suffix1. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mēi·s'nės) /ˈmeɪsənᵻs/: the pronunciation given above represents what might be expected in modern usage, but there is no evidence that the word has ever gained significant currency.
